Aim of the Museum

The National Earth Science Museum aims to:

 

  • Enhance knowledge and awareness of Namibia’s geological and paleontological resources.
  • Collect and preserve Namibia’s geological and paleontological heritage.
  • Educate the public through exhibitions, research, and outreach programs.

Displays

The museum offers a variety of captivating displays, including:

 

  • Rocks & Minerals: Explore Namibia’s diverse geological history through a vast collection of minerals and rocks. Discover the fascinating world of semi-precious stones, dimension stones, and the various uses of minerals in everyday life.
  • Mines in Namibia: Learn about the important role mining plays in Namibia’s economy. Explore exhibits showcasing various mines and exploration prospects, including diamond mining, the Tsumeb polymetallic deposit, and Namibia’s most important resource, diamonds.
  • Meteorites: Witness a piece of extraterrestrial history with a display featuring meteorites from the Gibeon Meteorite Shower, the most extensive meteorite shower on Earth.

Fossils of Namibia

Travel back in time and discover Namibia’s rich fossil record. Highlights include:

 

  • Stromatolites: Replica of the oldest fossils found in Namibia, primitive blue-green algae that lived over 800 million years ago.
  • Massospondylus: A replica of a prosauropod dinosaur that roamed Namibia 200 million years ago.
  • Erythrosuchus: The largest creature of its time, a thecodont reptile from the Triassic Period.
  • Ediacaran Fauna: Explore fossils like Pteridinium and Cloudina, offering insights into early life forms.
  • Otavipithecus namibiensis: The oldest fossil ape discovered in Southern Africa, dating back 13 million years.
  • Fossils from the Namib Desert: Discover fossilised ostrich eggs, rodents, crocodiles, elephants, and more.
