Ensuring a Safe and Healthy Mining Environment

The Mine Safety and Operations is committed to safeguarding the health and safety of employees in Namibia’s mining industry.

Primary Functions

  • Inspections and Recommendations: Conducting regular inspections of mining operations to identify safety hazards, recommend remedial actions, and provide advice to mine managers.
  • Accident Investigations: Investigating mine accidents and submitting reports to the Office of the Prosecutor General for decision-making.
  • Blasting Certificates: Issuing blasting certificates for both open-cast and underground mines. Mine Survey Maps: Maintaining and managing mine survey maps.
  • Accessory Work Permits: Assessing and approving applications for accessory work permits.
  • Pressure Vessels: Testing and certifying pressure vessels on mine sites.
  • Mine Plans: Assessing and approving mine plans.
  • Inter-ministerial Collaboration: Liaising with the Ministry of Labour and Ministry of Health on health and safety matters.
  • Industry Engagement: Serving on the Safety Committee of the Chamber of Mines of Namibia. Through dedicated efforts,  strive to create a safe and healthy working environment for all mining personnel in Namibia.
  • Advise the Minister of Industries, Mines and Energy on matters related to Safe Working Conditions in the Mining Industry in Namibia.
