At the Ministry of Mines and Energy, we are dedicated to ensuring that all Namibians have access to reliable electricity, while also working to include those communities that are currently underserved. Our goal is to make sure that every household and business has access to affordable electricity, whether it is generated locally or through our national grid.

Through the efforts of our Energy Directorate, and with the support of Cabinet, we have committed to this mission. By 2030, we aim to generate at least 80% of our electricity needs within Namibia. This ambitious goal will allow us to meet the growing demand at home and honour the power supply agreements we have with our neighbouring countries, which currently provide us with about 60% of our electricity.

We have made significant progress in recent years to reach this target. Since 2018, we have been collaborating with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) to develop alternative sources of electricity. One notable achievement is the Omburu Power Plant, which was commissioned in 2022 and now generates over 20 megawatts of clean energy.

We are also excited to announce the upcoming launch of the Anixas 2 Power Plant, which is set to be commissioned later this year. This emergency power plant, fuelled by diesel, will provide an additional 50 megawatts of electricity to our national grid, strengthening our energy supply during peak demand periods.

In our ongoing efforts to harness natural resources, we are expanding into alternative energy sources. NamPower has awarded a tender for a 100-megawatt solar PV power plant located in Rosh Pinah, marking a significant step towards increasing our renewable energy capacity.

Additionally, the 44-megawatt Diaz Wind Project, located in southern Namibia, is under construction and expected to be operational in Q4 of 2025. Construction of another 50-megawatt IPP wind project in the same vicinity is expected to start in 2025. This is another example of our commitment to green energy.

Looking ahead, the Ministry is working on the next phase of energy development, focusing on identifying new, sustainable energy sources. As we move forward, we remain committed to keeping Namibia powered through our natural resources, ensuring that electricity remains accessible and affordable for all.

Harnessing Our Resources, Powering Our Future.
