Projects

Rural Electrification Programme

Bringing electricity to rural areas is a cornerstone of Namibia’s economic development strategy. This program aims to:

  • Improve the socio-economic conditions of Namibian citizens.
  • Create opportunities for economic growth in rural communities.

Baynes HydroPower Project

The Baynes HydroPower Project is a significant initiative to harness renewable energy resources.

  • Project Viability: Recent studies have confirmed the project’s financial and technical feasibility.
  • Environmental Considerations: The Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) has been accepted, with some aspects requiring further refinement.
  • Cross-border Cooperation: The Ministers of Energy of Namibia and Angola have agreed to proceed with the project’s implementation.

ESI Restructuring

The Namibian electricity sector is undergoing restructuring to improve efficiency and enhance service delivery.

  • Challenges: Currently, the sector is characterized by a fragmented distribution sector and the dominance of a single utility.
  • Objectives: The goal is to create a more competitive and efficient electricity market that supports economic growth and development.
  • Progress: Three Regional Electricity Distribution Companies (REDs) have been established to date.
