Namibia is blessed with some of the world’s best conditions for renewable energy production. With abundant sunshine and strong coastal winds, we have a natural advantage in harnessing solar and wind power. Investments in large-scale solar farms and wind projects are already reducing our dependence on imported electricity, contributing to a cleaner and more self-sufficient energy landscape. Off-grid solar solutions are also transforming rural communities, bringing electricity to areas previously underserved by the national grid.
As one of the world’s top producers of uranium, Namibia has the potential to explore nuclear energy as a long-term solution to energy security. While we do not yet have nuclear power plants, discussions are advancing on how we might leverage this resource for domestic electricity production in the future. A well-managed nuclear strategy could provide a reliable and low-emission energy source to complement our growing renewable sector.
One of the most promising developments in Namibia’s energy landscape is green hydrogen. Our vast land, high solar intensity, and coastal access make us an ideal location for large-scale green hydrogen production. Produced using renewable energy to split water into hydrogen and oxygen, green hydrogen presents a clean alternative to fossil fuels and holds immense potential for industrial applications. With strong international interest, Namibia is poised to become a major player in the global green hydrogen market, potentially boosting job creation and attracting significant investment.
While the momentum towards renewables is strong, Namibia must manage this transition carefully. Today, we still rely heavily on electricity imports from neighboring countries, and the shift to a renewable-dominated energy mix must be executed in a way that ensures affordability, reliability, and accessibility for all Namibians. That is why we are taking a balanced approach, ensuring that as we scale up renewable energy, traditional sources like gas and imported electricity continue to play a role in maintaining stability within the grid.
